Security officers working at condominiums in Singapore have been falling victim to assaults lately and the worrying trend doesn’t seem to be stopping.
Recently, two men allegedly assaulted a security officer at a condo in Farrer Park.
A police report has been made over the incident.
Citing a statement by the Security Association Singapore (SAS), Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported that the incident took place at 6.30am on Sunday (7 May) morning.
It started when the security officer in question was conducting regular entry checks at the entrance of City Square Residences, a condo on Kitchener Road.
TODAY Online identified the officer as Mr Suraskumar, who’s employed by security agency Trek Investigations & Security Management Services.
In CCTV footage courtesy of SAS, Mr Suraskumar, who was wearing an all-black uniform, appeared to be arguing with some people just outside of the frame.
Some pushing and shoving ensued, as a woman seemingly tried to mediate.
She stood, raising her arms, in between the security officer and the people he was arguing with.
Unfortunately, her attempts were unsuccessful as two men walked past her and got into a physical altercation with Mr Suraskumar.
They both appeared to be hitting him with their hands, causing the security officer to retreat backwards.
Mr Suraskumar then backed into the gantry barrier, knocking it askew.
He briefly fell to the ground, with the two men still in pursuit.
Even after he got up, the duo continued to allegedly assault him.
Another video clip that TODAY shared showed a close-up of the two men, with the woman audibly saying in Mandarin, “Cannot do like that”.
The man in the white shirt then uttered something unintelligible.
A third video clip from TODAY meanwhile showed Mr Suraskumar on the ground grappling with the man in white, who was on top of him.
Other people then attempted to separate the two, as somebody exclaimed, “Stop!”
In their statement, SAS said Mr Suraskumar is recuperating from his injuries.
They added that the Union of Security Employees is aware of the incident.
A police report has also been made, and the CCTV footage shared with them.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed with CNA that they received an alert regarding the incident.
A 56-year-old man was taken to the hospital while conscious, they said.
A 26-year-old and 58-year-old man are assisting with investigations in connection with the case, the police added.
They have classified the case as voluntarily causing hurt to a security officer.
Police investigations are ongoing.
The management of City Square Residences has condemned the actions of the two men, saying they have “zero tolerance” for verbal or physical abuse to their frontline personnel.
They’ll “fully support the authorities in their investigations”, they added.
The management reportedly provided immediate support to Mr Suraskumar and will extend its duty of care to him.
Trek, his employer, expressed their deep concern over the incident.
They’re cooperating with the authorities to investigate what they describe to be a “heinous act”.
Unfortunately, this is just the latest in a spate of alleged assaults on condo security officers.
In August 2022, a man allegedly attacked a security officer at a condominium in Bukit Batok.
Last month, a resident of a Sin Ming condo mocked a security officer after his car was wheel-clamped.
Later that same month, a resident allegedly assaulted a security officer at a Potong Pasir condo, injuring him.
Hopefully, people will have more patience in their interactions with security officers, who are just doing their job.
