When faced with financial difficulties, it’s only natural for individuals to turn desperate in their attempts to secure money.
But it’s not often that we hear of people who would endanger their loved ones to get their hands on funds.
Earlier in June, however, a Sheng Siong employee ended up threatening her mother in an attempt to borrow $50 from her supervisor.

She was sentenced to 6 weeks’ jail after pleading guilty to criminal intimidation and harassment.
According to Shin Min Daily News, 35-year-old Cai Huishan – name directly translated from Mandarin – texted her supervisor on 12 Jun to borrow $50, claiming she had outstanding loanshark debts.
Cai was working as a cashier at a Sheng Siong supermarket outlet then.
After having her request rejected, Cai allegedly sent voice messages to her supervisor that afternoon, threatening to kill her own mother if they refused the loan.
At around 1pm, Cai grabbed a knife from the kitchen and held it against her 71-year-old woman’s shoulders, threatening to kill her.
Cai’s mother was terrified upon hearing the threat and pushed her daughter away.
Nonetheless, Cai snapped a photo of the threatening position and sent it to her supervisor later at around 2.05pm.
Upon receiving the photo, the supervisor reportedly informed their boss, who called the police after failing to contact Cai.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, one of Cai’s colleagues said she regularly borrowed money from other staff.
However, the borrowed sums were typically small, and she’d make it a point to repay her loans.
The colleague also told the Chinese daily that he was taken aback by her actions, claiming that she was rather quiet at work.
Despite what had happened, Cai’s elder brother said he’d still forgive his sister as it was a spur-of-the-moment decision.
Speaking in court, Cai maintained that she had no intentions to kill her mother and that it was merely a moment of folly.
The prosecution, however, argued that the knife was placed extremely close to the mother’s throat.
In the end, Cai was sentenced to 6 weeks’ jail for intimidation and harassment.
Times can be tough during the pandemic, but that’s no reason to threaten the life of your loved ones to secure funds.
Nonetheless, we’re touched by Cai’s brother’s decision to forgive and hope that Cai would cherish her family better once she’s released from jail.
