As the year comes to an end, Google has released a list of searches that trended in Singapore for 2024.
Unsurprisingly, the top searches by people in Singapore centred around beloved personalities, with Taylor Swift and Max Maeder topping the lists.
On Tuesday (10 Dec), Google unveiled its Year in Search 2024 lists.
The lists showcase the people, topics, events, and places that captured the attention of Singaporeans this year, the tech company said in a media release sent to MS News.
This year, sports and pop culture took centre stage in the more than one trillion queries its search engine received.
For Singapore news, Swift topped the list of trending searches thanks to her six sold-out concerts at the National Stadium that attracted fans from around the world to our island.
Even non-fans would’ve been aware of the American megastar’s impact as the shows boosted our economy, ruffled the feathers of our regional neighbours, led to ticket scams, and inspired themed installations at the Marina Bay Sands.
Further down the list, the popular Labubu toys came in 3rd as they continue to be obsessed over by Singaporeans.
Local personalities like Olympic bronze medalist Max Maeder and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong were 6th and 7th respectively.
Maeder was in the news for winning Singapore’s first Olympic medal since 2016 on National Day, while Mr Wong became Singapore’s fourth PM in May.
Reflecting Singaporeans’ concerns over the rising cost of living, Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers featured high on the list 2nd while Goods and Services Tax (GST) vouchers was at 8th amid the GST hike at the start of the year.
Swift, Labubu, and CDC vouchers also featured in the list of trending overall searches for Singapore this year, though sports competitions like Euro 2024, the Olympics, Copa América, and the Asian Cup dominated the list.
Also making the list was the blockbuster movie “How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies”, revealing just how much it tugged at the heartstrings of local moviegoers.
The film also topped the list of trending movies in Singapore, beating out Marvel movie ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (3rd), Jack Neo’s ‘Money No Enough 3’ (9th) and animated movies ‘Inside Out 2’ (2nd), ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ (5th) and ‘Despicable Me 4’ (10th).
While Maeder didn’t make the list of overall searches, he was the most-searched local personality this year.
He kept himself in the news not just for his Olympic medal, but for keeping up his winning streak at more kitefoiling competitions since.
Coming in second was PM Wong, while his wife Loo Tze Lui made it to 5th place.
Notable mentions were Dr Lee Wei Ling — the daughter of former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, who passed away in October — and former minister S. Iswaran, who was jailed in October.
Swift was again the headliner for international personalities, emerging as the top trending personality for the second year in a row.
She was also linked to two other entries on the list — fellow singer Sabrina Carpenter, who was the opening act for all six of her concerts in Singapore, was 8th, while her boyfriend Travis Kelce came in 10th.
Pope Francis, who visited Singapore in September, made an appearance at 4th on the list, while Singaporeans also seemed to be monitoring the United States elections, with President-elect Donald Trump, Vice-President Kamala Harris, and President Joe Biden coming in 2nd, 5th, and 7th respectively.
“US Elections 2024” was also 2nd on the list of overall searches for Singapore this year, showing that people in the Republic have an interest in foreign current affairs.
