When travelling on roads, it’s important to bear in mind that they’re shared spaces meant to be used by individuals operating all sorts of vehicles. As such, all road users must strive to be considerate and responsible. Unfortunately, that may not always be the case. Recently, a group of cyclists were seen taking up all three lanes on the West Coast Highway, creating an obstruction and possibly endangering themselves.
Netizens have since expressed their concerns about the cyclists’ actions online.
In the footage shared in the SG Road Vigilante (SGRV) Facebook group, several cyclists were seen riding down West Coast Highway, occasionally veering across adjacent lanes.
A speedometer in the top right corner of the footage alleges that they exceeded speeds of 50km/h, though there’s no way to verify this.
What was evident, however, was that the cyclists occupied all three lanes of the highway at one point, possibly obstructing other road users.
The short clip has since sparked concern among some netizens.
Several noted that heavy vehicles tend to ply this particular highway, which could put these cyclists in danger if a driver happens to not be alert enough to notice them.
While many called the riders out for failing to keep to a single file, a few commenters advised them to observe safety rules for their own sake.
For cyclists who may be unfamiliar, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) lists precautions all cyclists must take while on the road. It’s important to also note that they don’t allow cycling on expressways, which the West Coast Highway isn’t.
Perhaps aware of the backlash, other cyclists pointed out that this group’s behaviour is not representative of all of them.
Indeed, we shouldn’t allow the actions of a few to tarnish the reputation of many.
Nevertheless, road users should be aware of the dangers of breaking safety rules as these particular cyclists have done.
No matter what mode of travel a road user employs, obeying safety rules is key in preventing accidents from happening.
Not only will it ensure smoother journeys for them, but it also protects everyone else’s safety too.
We hope all road users, cyclists and motorists alike, will bear this in mind so they’ll be more responsible moving forward.
