S’pore Facebook Community Prints 3D Ear Guards To Ease Frontliners’ Pain From Wearing Masks

SG Makers Community Prints 3D Ear Guards To Ease Discomfort Of Healthcare Workers

Face masks are one of the most sought after products for healthcare workers fighting against the pandemic. However, they may cause ear discomfort in the long-run too.

To combat this issue, a Facebook community named “SG Makers Against COVID-19” has produced hundreds of ear savers or ear guards. This aims to protect the ears from chafing due to wearing a mask with a tight elastic strap.

If you’re armed with a 3D printer, here’s what you need to know about this initiative.

Beginning the Facebook community

Founder Kendrick Tay recently completed his masters at SUTD (Singapore University of Technology and Design) and sought to be an airforce pilot, according to Channel NewsAsia (CNA).

Like everyone else, his plans were put on hold due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

While scrolling through social media, he discovered that some of his schoolmates were printing 3D “ear savers” or ear guards. These plastic filaments are designed to remove the tension around the ears which are caused by the elastic loops and wearing masks for long hours.

He tells CNA,

I thought that’s a useful product because healthcare workers who wear surgical masks the entire day will face ear abrasion, especially if the strap is too tight.

After he jumped on the bandwagon, he realised that they would make a bigger impact if the local makers community was able to work together.

This led to the beginning of the “SG Makers Against Covid-19” Facebook group.

Over 170 members working on making ear guards

As of Thursday (7 May), the Facebook community has more than 170 members.

Some makers post digital files and information which enable members to print 3D-printed ear savers, face shields, and surgical mask straps.

While they can produce different types of protective equipment, they announced that their main focus is printing ear savers which are specialised for Singaporeans.

One of the latest designs is multi-coloured ear savers with our slogan “SG United”.

So far, they’ve started a first trial run with the help of 20 makers. They’ve also distributed a supply to KK Hospital and Thomson Medical Centre.

In their latest update, the organisers announced that they are moving to the second phase of their ambitious project. As a result, they are seeking more makers to join the cause and boost production.

Fundraiser to produce 35,000 ear guards for frontliners

While the group wants to create on a large scale, production comes with a price.

To keep up with the cost of demand, they started a fundraiser with a goal of $35,000.

They aim to raise $1 for each saver and create a total of 35,000 ear savers.

Besides healthcare workers, they want to provide masks to other essential workers like cleaners, food stall owners, cashiers, drivers, and delivery staff.

Join the cause

SG Makers Community is seeking more makers to join their cause. Those who aren’t makers or designers may contact organisers to find ways to contribute for the initiative.

Our lives may be at a standstill during this uncertain period, but we’re happy to see locals step up and do their part to put an end to this pandemic.
