69 people arrested for alleged involvement in illegal horse betting activities

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has arrested 69 individuals for their suspected involvement in illegal horse betting activities across the island.

The arrests were made during a series of operations conducted between 6 and 17 May.

S$50,000, mobile phones and horse betting paraphernalia seized

The police arrested 65 men and four women, aged between 29 and 87.

Over 160 officers carried out the raids at multiple locations, including Jurong West, Marsiling Lane, New Upper Changi Road, Eunos Crescent, Yishun, Circuit Road, Boon Lay Place, Sin Ming Road, Redhill Lane, Hougang, Ang Mo Kio, Teban Gardens, Yung Sheng Road, Bedok, and Rivervale Crescent.

Officers confiscated cash exceeding S$50,000, mobile phones, and horse betting paraphernalia from the premises.

The suspects are believed to have performed various roles, including bookmakers, runners, and punters.

Both operators and agents face fines and jail terms

Police are investigating them all under the Gambling Control Act 2022. Anyone found gambling with unlawful service providers can face a fine of up to S$10,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.

Under Section 18(2) of the same Act, those conducting an unlawful betting operation as an operator may be fined up to S$500,000 and jailed for up to seven years.

Meanwhile, people who work as agents in an unlawful betting operation face fines of up to S$200,000 and up to five years’ imprisonment, according to Section 18(3) of the same Act.

Police take firm action against illegal gambling

The police emphasised that they do not condone illegal gambling and will continue to take firm enforcement action against offenders.
