AIA Singapore Apologises For Tampines Balloon Incident Involving Mother & Child

Recently, insurance agents at Century Square came under fire from a mother when they allegedly took back a balloon they had given to her child after realising that she didn’t fit their customer profile.

The move was lambasted by the public, many of whom criticised the marketing tactic.

Since then, insurance company AIA Singapore has issued a statement apologising for the incident.

They have also reiterated roadshow guidelines to their representatives so that they will conduct themselves to the highest standard of professionalism.

AIA counsels insurance agents involved in Tampines balloon incident

In the statement shared with MS News, AIA Singapore apologised for the unpleasant experience during the roadshow.

They claimed that they have since counselled the agents involved in the incident.

To ensure that no such lapses happen again, AIA Singapore will reiterate their roadshow guidelines and ensure their agents adhere to them.

Lastly, AIA mentioned that they have connected with Ms Nazreen to address her concerns.

Agent takes back balloon from child as mum doesn’t fit customer profile

To jog your memory, the Tampines balloon incident happened at Century Square on 10 Jun.

A mother and her 2-year-old daughter were walking in the mall’s vicinity when a lady approached the child with a balloon.

Prior to the exchange, the mother noticed the lady coming from an AIA roadshow booth nearby, and understood that she was an insurance agent.

Even so, she proceeded to answer the agent’s series of questions. Afterwards, however, the agent took the balloon back from her child, allegedly on the grounds that she did not fit her customer profile.

Hope agents act more professionally moving forward

While this incident may not reflect well on AIA, we must remember that one bad agent is not representative of the entire company.

Hopefully, now that they’ve addressed the matter, such incidents won’t happen again.

We also hope that they’ve indeed reached out to the mother and daughter to offer an apology. Perhaps a free balloon to make up for what happened would be nice too.
