The Facebook post read: “More lanes can also be operated without the need for each lane to be manned by an ICA officer.”

Trial results have shown an estimated 10% shorter clearance time than manual lanes. This is approximately two seconds saved per motorcycle.

ICA hopes that this implementation will improve efficiency and reduce delays, especially during peak periods.

Who is eligible?

Facial recognition will be used for clearing travellers at these new lanes.

As such, they will be eligible to all Singaporean residents, long-term pass holders, and foreign visitors who have previously entered Singapore.

Step-by-step process

ICA has also provided a simple guide on how to go about using the new lanes.

Motorcyclists should first lift their helmet visor and remove any facial-obscuring accessory before entering the lane.

Foreign-registered motorcycles will need to insert their Autopass card.

Next, motorcyclists should scan the QR code generated via the MyICA mobile app or their passport.

Lastly, look at the screen to capture their facial image for identity verification. The system is capable of capturing and verifying two faces simultaneously, so both rider and passenger are cleared at the same time.

Riders can then exit the lane upon successful verification.
