A 23-year-old woman broke two bones in her right leg after going down the tube slide at Changi Airport’s Terminal 4 on Monday (4 Nov).
Z (pseudonym) recounted her experience on Xiaohongshu, where she called the attraction “the leg-breaking slide”.
The ride went “okay” the first time she went, but she noticed that the turns were rather dangerous. The video she took inside the slide while descending also showed a less-than-smooth ride.
However, “things went wrong” when she got on it the second time.
In the video taken by her friend who was at a distance from the slide, a snap was heard just as the woman landed at the bottom.
When her friends realised that she was not getting up, they ran to her aid and asked for help from airport staff who provided her with a wheelchair and some ice, while a doctor gave her painkillers.
According to Z, the ambulance took about 60 minutes to arrive. She then spent 6.5 hours at the hospital.
“It hurt so much that I cried for 2 hours, took a lot of painkillers, and got a painkiller injection before I could bear it,” she said.
She later realised that her shoes’ anti-slip soles were what caused her legs to get stuck on the slide during the speedy descent, leading to her broken bones.
Z shared that she will require surgery after the swelling on her leg subsides in five to seven days.
She has already racked up over S$560 in medical bills and expects it to increase when she receives surgery in Malaysia.
She warned other travellers to play in the slide at their own risk as it was “super troublesome to get injured” there.
“If you miss the flight, the airline will not sympathize with you,” she wrote in the video, then added in the caption, “You can’t get on the plane or go back to your country.”
Z has since written to Changi Airport Group (CAG) via its online feedback form.
In response to MS News‘ queries, a Changi Airport Group spokesperson said they “regret to hear” about the incident.
The representative shared that safety guidelines are displayed at the slide’s entrance to ensure visitors have a “good experience” at the attraction.
The spokesperson took the opportunity to express their best wishes to the visitor and hope she has a swift recovery.
