Bukit Batok Invaded By Swarms Of Black Insects, Residents Advised To Shut Windows & Turn Off Lights

Insect Infestation At HDBs In Bukit Batok

Back in 2015, small mysterious insects swarmed Bukit Batok, causing concern to the residents and now they may be back.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, residents living in Bukit Batok have been experiencing swarms of unidentified tiny black insects invading their homes in the past few days.

Bukit Batok residents have been advised by their town council to shut their windows and turn off the lights whenever possible to prevent letting them in.

The mysterious insects are each no bigger than a grain of rice, but collectively can be quite a scary sight. They are speculated to be the same insects from 2015.

The pest sightings are commonly reported near blocks 170, 171 and 172, which are located along Bukit Batok Avenue 8.

Light traps set-up to draw insect’s attention

According to The Straits Times, Jurong-Clementi Town Council has set up a light trap near block 170 to try to draw the insects’ attention and lead them away.

The town council has also covered the lights in HDB blocks with yellow-tinted paper to discourage the insects from gathering around them.

Insects are not harmful

The insect is speculated to be the Ataenius Australasiae, a type of winged-insect.

Dr Paul Skelley, an entomologist, said in 2015: “They do not carry any known disease, are not venomous and cannot harm humans.” This means that, thankfully, they are only a nuisance pest.

The pests are found on residents’ dining tables, beds, water bottles and sometimes even the oil offerings of Buddhist alters.

They can also cling onto your skin, which may cause you to feel itchiness.

Remember to shut your windows

With the situation not yet under control, keep your windows closed at all times to prevent these pests from entering your home. And turn off your lights when they’re not in use. To keep the insects away AND to save the earth.
