Before enlisting for National Service (NS), young Singaporean men have to go through a series of tests to make sure that they are physically and medically fit to serve the nation.
One of the most challenging tests is the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT), which is often the deciding factor of their physical abilities.
To do well for IPPT, many pre-enlistees would hit the gym months before their test dates. But gym membership prices don’t come cheap these days.
Hence, if you’re a pre-enlistee looking to up your fitness game, here’s some good news for you.
Next month onwards, you can get a free 1-year gym membership to 6 EnergyOne SAFRA gyms, according to The Straits Times.
This initiative is a joint effort by SAFRA and Ministry of Defense (MINDEF), as part of the Pre-Enlistees Exercise Programme for National Service (Prep4NS).
Next month onwards, pre-enlistees will be able to enjoy free 1-year membership at 6 EnergyOne SAFRA gyms:
As a pre-requisite, MINDEF stated that this initiative is only meant for those who have registered for NS and are medically fit to serve the nation.
You can only visit the gym for free during off-peak hours. Here are the timings available:
We reckon that this restriction is made for crowd control purposes.
After all, if you’ve been to a gym before, you would know how frustrating it is to queue for your equipment when the gym is crowded.
Registration for free memberships will start next month. Your membership period will start after your application is approved.
More details can be found on the SAFRA website next month onward.
Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman, who is Senior Minister of State for Defence and president of SAFRA, mentioned that group classes will also be held at the gyms.

During these group classes, pre-enlistees will also get the chance to workout and prepare for IPPT together.
If you are enlisting soon, there’s no harm in making new friends as they’ll all be in the same boat as you in a few months’ time.
In addition, studies have shown that working out with friends can motivate you to hit the gym even on days when you’re feeling a little sluggish.
With this programme, you can finally get to workout for free before going for the famously dreaded IPPT.
In case you didn’t know, if you fail the test, you might have to enlist a few months earlier just to better train your physique.
So if you want to avoid losing the few extra months of freedom, it’s time to start early and train yourself before the army does.
