Commuters saw smoke coming out of MRT train at Bukit Gombak station

On Tuesday (15 Sept), commuters evacuated a train at Bukit Gombak station after smoke was seen coming from underneath the carriage.

The incident occurred at around 11.40am, resulting in temporary chaos at the station.

In a video posted on Instagram account @sgfollowsall, commuters and station staff moved around the station as smoke filled the air.

The source of the smoke appears to be a train stopped at the station.

Several commuters also took out their phones to record the incident.

An SMRT staff member also took photos of the train before entering and moving through the carriages.

Later that day, a separate video posted on the same account shows the incident from another perspective.

In the footage, several commuters looked around trying to identify the source of the smoke, while a staff member communicates with someone over a walkie-talkie.

A female staff member, who appears to be the same person seen in the earlier video, then rushes into the train and emerges carrying a green plastic bag.

The platform screen doors subsequently closed, after which the staff member runs through the train carriages.

Faulty brake may have caused the smoke

In response to queries from MS News, SMRT Trains President Lam Sheau Kai confirmed that the smoke came from underneath a train at Bukit Gombak station on the North-South Line.

Preliminary checks indicated that a faulty brake may have caused the smoke.

Mr Lam said: “As a safety precaution, our staff promptly assisted all commuters to leave the train safely. The train was then withdrawn to the depot for further checks.

“Train services continued to operate normally. There were no reports of commuters needing medical assistance.”
