Six more bus interchanges in Singapore are slated for upgrades, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Tuesday (18 Aug), two years after the upgrading of seven interchanges began in 2024.
One of the facilities that will start enhancement works next year is Bukit Batok Bus Interchange, which currently has a “retro feel”, said Senior Minister of State for Transport and Law Murali Pillai.

The upgrading is part of efforts to enhance commuters’ comfort and create a more family-friendly and inclusive public transport system, LTA said.
When completed, the bus interchanges will have improved accessibility by way of enhanced “inclusivity facilities” such as:

Existing air-conditioning, ventilation and lighting systems will also be replaced and upgraded to improve comfort and energy efficiency.
Staff facilities won’t be left out, as amenities such as passenger service offices and staff lounges will also be refurbished to better support frontline staff like bus captains in serving commuters.

Mr Murali, who is also an MP for Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC, said in a media doorstop that Bukit Batok Bus Interchange opened in 1987.
Thus, it has “a certain retro feel”, he noted, adding that it is “about time” it gets upgraded and the works would be completed in “a few years”.

This is also true for the five other interchanges whose upgrading was announced, he maintained.
But he cautioned that commuters will have to put up with “some level of disamenities and inconvenience”, when the upgrading works start, for example noise.
He hoped commuters could “bear with it” and look forward to the revamped facilities that would cater to their future needs.
LTA said the works will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to bus services and sought commuters’ “understanding and patience”.

LTA had previously announced the upgrading of seven bus interchanges in 2024, including those in Ang Mo Kio, Clementi, Sengkang and Toa Payoh.
Works on these interchanges, which began in August 2024, are “progressing well”, LTA updated.
They are “on track” to be completed next year, it added.
