Did you know that cab drivers are not allowed to smoke in their vehicles? This was apparently what one driver did, placing him in an unfavourable situation.
A viral photo has been making rounds on Facebook since Thursday (3 Oct), showing a cab driver kneeling down.
He seemed like he was begging for something from 2 National Environment Agency (NEA) officers.
Netizens have expressed sadness and pity for seeing a cab driver having go down on his knees “begging for mercy”.
We later learnt from Lianhe Zaobao, that this happened because he was actually issued a $200 fine for smoking inside his car.
According to Lianhe Zaobao on Friday (4 Oct), the NEA officers had fined the cabbie $200 for smoking in his car with his windows wound down.
The incident reportedly took place on Thursday (3 Oct) along Mount Elizabeth Road around 12pm.
An NEA representative also stated that the cab driver could have been fined up to $1,000 for smoking in a public service vehicle.
NEA is aware of the photo depicting the man ‘begging for mercy’ circulating around the Internet, and confirmed the incident.
According to NEA’s website, there are laws in place to prohibit smoking inside public service vehicles, including taxis, to protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke.
