Car crashes into food court and strikes woman

A car crashed into Shin Siji Food Court in Cheras Crown City, Selangor, Malaysia, early Saturday (22 Aug) morning.

The vehicle struck a metal pole, which fell and killed a woman who reportedly tried to stop the car from leaving.

The 35-year-old male driver has been arrested while police investigation is ongoing.

Victim tried to stop car from leaving

According to Sin Chew Daily, Kajang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said the incident occurred at 1.15am.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that a 35-year-old local man accelerated his car into the food court’s dining area before turning around and leaving, while the 47-year-old victim ran over to try to stop the car from leaving,” he stated.

However, the car crashed into an iron pole, which then struck the woman’s head.

The victim sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police investigating claim that driver was drink driving

The driver has been arrested but remains in the hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.

“Police have collected samples from him for further investigation; the investigation found that he has no criminal record,” said Mr Naazron.

The authorities are currently investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (causing death by dangerous and reckless driving).

 

If convicted, an individual faces up to 10 years’ jail, a fine of up to RM50,000 (S$15,700) and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years.

The authorities are also looking into an online claim that the accident was due to drink driving.
