Since the easing of land border measures between Singapore and Malaysia, both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints have seen heavy traffic on major weekends.
Unsurprisingly, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) issued an advisory warning about heavy traffic over the upcoming September school holiday, which commences on 2 Sep.
In light of the potentially heavy traffic, ICA advised those travelling during the upcoming holidays to plan their trip with delays in mind.
In their advisory posted on Wednesday (31 Aug), ICA stated that traffic flow through the land checkpoints are gradually returning to pre-Covid-19 levels.
Over the most recent weekend from 26 Aug to 28 Aug, more than 313,000 visitors apparently cleared immigration at both checkpoints each day.
This was higher than that during the National Day holiday, which saw about 302,000 visitors per day crossing the checkpoint.
As such, ICA expects the traffic volume for the upcoming September school holiday to be similarly high.
Travellers who plan on crossing the Causeway from 2 Sep to 11 Sep should hence anticipate delays and adjust their plans accordingly to avoid getting caught in traffic jams.
“We seek travellers’ understanding and cooperation to be patient, observe traffic rules, maintain lane discipline, and cooperate with officers on-site when using the land checkpoints,” ICA said.
ICA noted that during the September school holidays in 2019, visitors had to wait for up to one and a half hours before clearing immigration at the checkpoints.
ICA has thus identified the peak periods for travellers to avoid from 2 Sep to 11 Sep, listed in the table below:
They also advised travellers to factor in additional time for immigration clearance when planning their journey.
Motorists can further check traffic conditions at the land checkpoints via the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) One Motoring website or the Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS) installed along BKE and AYE.
ICA will continue to provide regular updates on the traffic situation via its Facebook and Twitter accounts.
