Family uses plastic bag to rescue chick that fell into HDB drain after hearing it chirping loudly

A teenage girl and her mother found a baby chick that had fallen into an HDB drain and quickly went to rescue it.

With the help of a plastic bag, they successfully returned the chick to its mother hen.

According to the Original Poster (OP), the incident happened last Sunday (23 Aug) afternoon at a Marine Terrace HDB block.

The OP and her 19-year-old daughter, Cadence, had left to buy some things.

They heard chicks chirping but did not think too much of it, as there was a family of junglefowl in their estate.

At about 3.50pm, the two of them returned to the area. This time, they could hear a single chick still chirping very loudly.

Now curious, Cadence and her mother searched for the source. They discovered a chick stuck inside the drain in front of an HDB block.

“Whenever we go near, it will run, and it ran further and further away,” the OP told MS News.

Determined to save the chick, Cadence ran upstairs to get her father to help while the OP stayed with the chick.

They came up with a plan: removing a drain grate and placing an open plastic bag there.

Once that was set up, Cadence and her mother chased the chick towards the bag.

“It took two tries as the chick was scared,” the OP said. But they eventually succeeded in catching the tiny chick in the plastic bag.

Rescued chick rushes back to mother hen

She explained to MS News that the chick belonged to a rooster named Bruce and a hen named Bella, who roamed the estate.

The OP also clarified that these are their personal unofficial nicknames for the junglefowl parents.

With the chick in tow, they successfully found Bella the hen at another HDB block with the rest of the children.

Cadence pulled out the soft, fluffy chick and held it out in front of the hen.

Immediately, the chick leapt out of her hands and rushed towards its mother, much to their elation.

The OP called it a “touching and sweet moment” as the chick disappeared into the ranks of its siblings.

Their Facebook post later that day gained over 390 likes at the time of writing.

Wildlife enthusiasts widely praised them for rescuing the chick.

One commenter jokingly thanked them for ‘Saving Private Ryan’, leading the OP to nickname the chick ‘Ryan’.

“We don’t think much [of] what we did. We just pray they will be safe growing up here from now onwards,” she told MS News.

The OP added that this was the first time they experienced a chick falling into a drain, although the former community cat previously had to be rescued from one.
