Choa Chu Kang blaze involved contents of a bedroom in 2nd-floor unit

Two people were sent to the hospital on Saturday (29 Aug) night after a fire broke out in a flat in Choa Chu Kang.

Footage posted on TikTok showed black smoke coming from the upper floor of an executive maisonette unit.

Police & SCDF seen at Choa Chu Kang block

In the clip, several police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) vehicles were seen parked next to Block 287 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2.

A number of firefighters were also spotted at the scene, along with numerous police officers.

A large crowd of residents were gathered in the void deck after having possibly been evacuated.

Choa Chu Kang blaze extinguished by SCDF

In response to queries from MS News, the SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at about 9.05pm on 29 Aug.

It involved the contents of a bedroom in a second-floor unit at Block 287 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2.

The blaze was extinguished by SCDF using one water jet.

2 self-evacuate from affected unit

While two people had self-evacuated from the affected unit before SCDF arrived, about 200 residents from the affected block were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Two people were conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Hospitalised residents already discharged: MP

In a Facebook post on Sunday (30 Aug), Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim said the two hospitalised residents had already been discharged.

Though he was overseas on a work trip, he was informed of the fire last night and was relieved that there were no serious injuries.

Mr Zhulkarnain, who is also an MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC, thanked Keat Hong grassroots volunteers who stayed on the ground until late at night to support affected residents and town council workers who helped clean the affected units and preschool centre.

He also expressed gratitude to a neighbour who stepped forward to help care for the pets from the affected unit, describing it as “a simple but meaningful act of neighbourly kindness”.
