After several weeks of fewer Covid-19 cases, Singapore’s outbreak situation is seeing a surge once again.
On Wednesday (5 Jan), the Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed 805 new Covid-19 cases, including 440 Omicron infections.
Meanwhile, 2 deaths were reported, bringing the national death toll to 842.
Here’s a summary of last night’s updates.
According to MOH, 805 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday comprised 353 in the community, 13 in the dormitories, and 439 imported.
There were also 2 deaths, but no further details were given.
Of the 805 cases, 440 Omicron infections were confirmed, including 138 local and 302 imported cases.
The weekly infection growth rate is at 1.28. If you need a reminder, this rate indicates the ratio between the number of cases in one week and the number in the previous week.
Previously, one of the key requirements for Singapore to ease safety measures was that the number falls below 1.0.
The last time Singapore’s weekly infection growth rate was above 1 was on 12 Nov, at 1.04.
During the Multi-Ministry Task Force meeting on the same day, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung announced that adults in Singapore require Covid-19 booster shots to remain fully vaccinated from 14 Feb.
As of 4 Jan, MOH confirmed that 43% of the total population has received their booster shots.
Meanwhile, 87% of the total population has completed the previous full regimen of 2 doses.
Singapore’s recent uptick in Covid-19 cases is concerning. But Minister Ong reassured that none of the 2,252 Omicron cases here required intensive care.
Now that the holiday season is over, Singaporeans will be busy prepping for the next significant festive period—Chinese New Year.
Social gatherings will remain capped at 5. So it’s up to us to become socially responsible people by wearing a mask, practising good personal hygiene, and refraining from breaking Covid-19 safety rules in general.
Then, we can all enjoy the festive holiday safely.
