On 17 Aug, around 40 dog carcasses were found dumped inside a waste bin near a market in Johor Bahru. A clip shared on Facebook showed the dogs wrapped inside black plastic bags.

According to The Rakyat Post, the incident sparked widespread public concern, with some wondering if the RM50 (S$15) incentive to capture strays was the cause.
The dogs were reportedly found at 5pm on 17 Aug in Batu Pahat, Johor.
The posts called for an investigation into how the dogs died, as well as additional considerations on managing the stray population so that more dogs will not get harmed.
One netizen called for a more comprehensive solution to the stray issue. Their list of demands includes: Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR), mass sterilisation, microchipping, stronger laws against abandoning pets, and more.
They also called for the RM50 (S$15) incentive for capturing strays to be temporarily suspended.
The incident comes following another case plastered to headlines in Malaysia, also related to stray-catching.
On Thursday (20 Aug), two people were charged with committing animal cruelty. During a stray-catching operation in Klang on 29 July, a dog named Rocky died when a volunteer canine-catcher strangled the canine with a loop.
The dog’s owner had kept Rocky without a license. During the operation, she tried to cut the loop restraining the dog. The ensuing scuffle with the volunteer eventually killed the dog. Both the volunteer and the owner were charged.
