Pickup driver chases delivery rider after mistaking his singing for insult

On 22 July, a 24-year-old food delivery rider in Chonburi, Thailand, was chased and assaulted by a pickup driver and his passenger who mistook his singing for an insult.

However, when he passed a pickup truck, the driver misheard his singing as verbal abuse aimed at him.

The driver then began pursuing the rider, intending to attack him.

Mr Thanawat quickly sped off to escape, eventually parking in front of a shop and running for safety as two men got out of the truck, chased him, and kicked his motorcycle over, causing damage.

Witness called for assaulters to stop

Ms Waleelak (name transliterated from Thai), a shop employee, stated that she saw the rider’s motorcycle park nearby, followed closely at high speed by the pickup truck.

She alleged that the men got out of the vehicle and attacked the rider before kicking his motorcycle over.

She then shouted at them to stop and calm down, after which the two men dispersed.

Driver apologised and compensated victim

Following the incident, the rider filed a police report at Saen Suk Police Station.

Later, the pickup truck driver, 50-year-old Thaworn (name transliterated from Thai), arrived at the police station to explain himself and apologise to the victim.

He said that while driving down the alley, he heard what sounded like the rider shouting insults and assumed it was directed at him.

Consumed by anger, he gave chase to confront the rider and kicked the motorcycle over.

Police mediated between the two. Thaworn apologised to the young rider and compensated him for the damages, admitting that he had acted out of heat of passion and lost his temper.
