Ex-cleaner in M’sia becomes millionaire overnight after winning lucky draw organised by bank

Malaysian ex-cleaner is now millionaire after winning RM1 million in bank lucky draw

While becoming a millionaire seems like a pipe dream for most of us, it has happened to a few lucky lottery winners.

For one man from Malaysia, however, he got his first RM1,000,000 (S$281,000) simply by saving up — in a manner of speaking.

He had been saving up with the bank for decades.

Ex-cleaner initially began saving up for emergency purposes

61-year-old Mohd Nazri Abdul Wazir said he never expected to win RM1,000,000 as a result of his consistent savings, Harian Metro reported.

He has been saving with Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) under a Premium Savings Certificate (SSP) account since 2003.

Mr Nazri initially started depositing money there to save up for emergencies.

It was not until last year that he decided to try his luck by entering the lucky draw, according to Bernama.

Speaking to reporters at a ceremony where he received a mock cheque, Mr Nazri said he decided to save under BSN SSP as the high dividends and prizes offered appealed to him.

He also shared that he was shocked to receive a call from a BSN officer earlier this February, and quipped that it was a good thing he did not pass out at the time.

New millionaire will use lucky draw money to bring mother to Mecca

Asked about his plans for the prize money, Mr Nazri said he would bring his 84-year-old mother to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The remaining money will then be channelled into his daily expenses.

Aside from Mr Nazri, BSN also crowned yet another lucky draw winner at the same time.

As the winner of the BSN 50th Anniversary draw, 57-year-old Mohd Nasir Abdullah walked away with an impressive RM50,000 (S$14,000).

Like his fellow victor, Mr Nasir had been saving with BSN for quite some time, having started when he was single.

Now a father of three, he joined the lucky draw in June last year.

The prize money will go towards his school-going children.

RM1,000,000 lucky draw was previously won by retiree in 2023

Mr Nazri’s story mirrors that of his 2023 predecessor, a 66-year-old man who won RM1,000,000 in a similar lucky draw last year.

Mr Zaini Din had an even longer history of saving up with BSN SSP, dating back to 1990.

He won the 2023 lucky draw after purchasing a certificate on his birthday in 2022, reported The Sun.

Like his fellow millionaire, Mr Zaini decided to use his winnings to take his wife, children, and in-laws to perform the Umrah in Mecca.

Besides that, the retired customs officer planned to give his children some of the money to kickstart their savings in BSN SSP.
