M’sian man stuck with S$3.1K/month Pasir Ris condo studio after S’porean fiancée’s affair with best man

Malaysian man seeks help to terminate expensive condominium rental contract after fiancée cheats on him

A Malaysian man has taken to Reddit to seek advice after finding himself trapped in an expensive condominium lease following a breakup with his fiancée.

The 32-year-old said he is now struggling to cope financially after allegedly discovering that his fiancée had been having an affair with his best man.

Upgraded to condo studio apartment

Posting on r/askSingapore on 1 May, the Original Poster (OP) shared that he had been renting a master bedroom with his then-fiancée in Tampines.

When the lease expired, she persuaded him to upgrade to a one-bedroom studio unit in a “brand new condo” above Pasir Ris Mall.

Despite his preference for a more affordable two-room HDB flat, he eventually relented, agreeing to pay S$3,100 a month for the unit, which he admitted was “way over” his budget.

However, about six months into the two-year lease, the OP discovered that his fiancée had allegedly been having an affair with his best man for nearly two years.

She had even brought him back to the condominium.

“I kicked her out of my place,” the OP said after he found out.

After breaking up, the former couple later signed a separate agreement for her to contribute S$550 monthly for the rent.

However, she allegedly stopped paying after a few months when she got a new boyfriend, eventually removing herself from the lease altogether.

She also reportedly got engaged during what was supposed to be their original wedding week.

Left to shoulder the rent alone on a S$5,000 salary, the OP said the financial strain became ” intolerable”.

“I want to hand this over to another tenant but no luck yet due to the price of this place,” he explained, adding that he had tried to negotiate an early termination.

The OP also asked if anyone familiar with tenancy laws could shed light on his situation.

Netizens suggest possible solutions

The post has since attracted significant attention, with many helpful netizens offering potential solutions.

Some advised the OP to find another tenant willing to take over the remaining lease period.

Others suggested lowering the rental price temporarily to reduce his monthly burden.

One commenter also encouraged him to review the tenancy agreement carefully, particularly the termination clause, which may specify notice periods or early exit conditions.

Another netizen felt that it was the OP’s ex-fiancée who was at fault in this case, not the landlord.
