No injuries reported after grass patch catches fire in Serangoon North

A grass patch that caught fire in Serangoon North last Thursday (10 Sept) was put out by members of the public using buckets of water.

Footage of the incident posted on TikTok showed several spots of the grass patch covered by flames.

Joss sticks seen burning the ground

In the clip, a large metal bin typically used for burning Hungry Ghost Festival offerings stood amid the flames.

Also burning were several joss sticks that had been inserted into the ground.

10 Sept was the final day of the Hungry Ghost Festival.

A large area of the grass patch, which was next to many parked motorcycles, appeared to have been burnt by the fire.

OP splashes water onto Serangoon North fire

The original poster (OP) quipped in his caption that somebody’s ancestors were getting an “additional grass patch” as an offering.

He recorded himself carrying a bucket of water to the scene.

He then scooped water into a basin and splashed it on the fire, in an apparent effort to put it out.

Later, he shared an image of the charred grass patch after the fire had been put out, and credited the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) with the job.

Fire involved 5m by 2m patch of grass near Serangoon North block

In response to queries from MS News, SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at about 7.20pm on 10 Sept.

It involved a patch of vegetation measuring about 5m by 2m near Block 545 Serangoon North Avenue 3.

The blaze was extinguished by members of the public, who used buckets of water, before SCDF arrived.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

4th vegetation fire in 1 week

This was at least the fourth reported vegetation fire in Singapore in just one week.

On 3 Sept, an open field in Bukit Panjang caught fire, while a fire broke out at a grass patch near a heavy vehicle carpark in Seletar on 4 Sept.

On the night of 7 Sept, a fire raged across a large patch of hillside vegetation measuring about 200m by 200m next to Gali Batu Depot.

The inferno was seen by several Yew Tee residents, but the area’s MP said it was confined to the vegetation.
