When a grassroots leader happened to notice that a flat was on fire in Woodlands, they quickly alerted the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
This allowed about 50 people in the affected block to evacuate safely, said Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC MP Hany Soh in an Instagram post on Monday (12 Oct).

Ms Soh said Sunday (11 Oct) night was “worrying” for the residents of Block 514 Woodlands Drive 14.
She had been alerted that night that a fire had broken out at about 9.40pm in a bedroom of one of the flats there.
A photo she shared showed that flames could be seen through the unit’s window from the ground level.

Thankfully, a grassroots leader spotted it and quickly alerted SCDF, she added.
In response to queries from MS News, SCDF confirmed that it was alerted to the fire at about 9.40pm on 11 Oct.
It involved the contents of a bedroom in a unit on the sixth floor.
SCDF put out the fire using a Compressed Air Foam (CAF) trolley.
About 50 people were evacuated by the police and SCDF, with no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Ms Soh thanked the police and SCDF, as well as the town council, HDB and Residents’ Network (RN) grassroots leaders for their “swift action”.
She also expressed appreciation to them for working closely with her to provide “the necessary support on the ground”.
She and her team will continue to assist the affected residents, the MP pledged, wishing them well.
