Those who’ve lived in Singapore long enough would know that we do have seasons here — dry spells, monsoon, and durian. Giant Tampines will be celebrating the best of these till 30 Jun, with popular durian varieties on sale from just S$2.
Dubbed their “Biggest Durian Sale of the Year”, customers can get their fix of Mao Shan Wang (MSW), Red Prawn, and many others for cheap at the Tampines Hypermarket.
Of course, the age-old caveat of “while stocks last” applies, but to get your hands on the creamy goodness for the price of a cai png order is reason enough to head down early.
There’s a saying that goes, “we eat with our eyes first”, so let’s take a look at the goods before they end up in our tummy.
A visit to the Giant Hypermarket at Tampines often entails bringing at least one trolley to carry your grocery haul.
But as you walk into the level one atrium, the brimming baskets of durian might catch your eye instead, and end up occupying all your trolley space.
The wide variety of durians available might leave you scratching your head over what to get, which is why consulting a durian expert would help.
Stationed by the sale section, not only will these shifus help you pick the durians that’ll suit your preference, they’ll also pick the best ones so you’ll get your money’s worth.
Nothing quite beats the satisfaction of prying the thorny shell open and finding succulent durian flesh inside, and you’re guaranteed to get just that.
Though the whole fam may enjoy eating durians together, dad may prefer the bitter MSW while your younger siblings love the sweeter flesh of the D13.
No need to scour the whole of Singapore to find the different varieties when you can get them all right here at Giant Tampines.
Coloured like a beautiful sunset, these orangey Red Prawn durians may be cheaper than their more famous counterparts, but still pack quite a punch.
More avid durian fans may eye the MSW variety which is a lot creamier with a slight bitterness to every bite.
To give you a sense of what you can find at the sale, these are some of the types of durians that will be available:
If you’re hosting a durian party anytime soon, bringing a bucketload of any of these varieties will definitely get your guests talking.
The low prices are sure to get people coming from all corners of Singapore.
Knowing that, Giant is refreshing their stock daily and if you get a huge whiff of durian while parking your vehicle, you may be able to spot workers arranging boxes of the fruit.
If this sight doesn’t whet your appetite, here are directions to Giant Hypermarket at Tampines so you can see it with your own eyes:

Although we live in the tropics here in Singapore, the durian season doesn’t run all year round.
So having them in season is a treat for most of us and something that can’t be missed.
Start indulging in the King of Fruits while supplies are still abundant and stock some up at home so you can grab a bite whenever the craving kicks in.
