The perks of great views & fresher air come with the drawback of unintended staircase workouts when HDB lifts are out of order.

The good news is that at over 3,000 lifts across HDB estates in Singapore are due for an upgrade in the near future.

But what exactly would these upgrades focus on? Here’s a summary of what functions we can look forward to for our new HDB lifts, once renovations are complete.

At least 3,231 lifts due for upgrades

1,200 lifts in PAP-led constituencies have been undergoing upgrades since Jan 2019, according to a statement carried by The Straits Times on Tuesday (9 Jun).

A further 3,231 lifts are due for renovations, to be rolled out over the next decade.

1,500 lifts in estates run by Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) will also be upgraded over the next 10 years as well.

Safer & more reliable lifts

Enhancing 5,198 lifts involved in these projects will cost about $107 million in tenders that have been awarded thus far, stated ST.

The funds will help upgraded lifts perform these functions:

  • Speed protection – Monitors lift speed
  • Failure guards – Prevents “unintended movement”
  • Electrical safety device – Stops the lift in emergencies
  • Car apron – Prevents falls into lift shaft
  • Light curtains – Protects lift door
  • Electrical safety interlocking – Lifts stay in place when doors open
  • Automatic rescue device – Opens lift door at nearest floor during power failure
  • Communications system – For emergency rescues

Better lifts for all residents across Singapore

The Straits Times reports that 17,000 lifts across HDB estates in Singapore are managed by PAP-led town councils.

As for Aljunied and Hougang residents’ estate upgrades, they will fall under the purview of AHTC, led by Workers’ Party.

As elections are drawing near, however, residents will definitely be seeking more accountability from their constituent’s leaders.

Of course, we’re looking forward to safer and more reliable lifts in all of our estates, regardless of town council or political affiliations.
