Controversial American streamer Johnny Somali has been barred from leaving Korea and may face jail time if found guilty of charges relating to drugs and obstruction of business.
According to The Korea Herald, Korean authorities imposed a travel ban on the streamer to prevent him from leaving the country while police investigations are ongoing.
According to Dexerto, the streamer, whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, gained notoriety when he streamed himself being a public nuisance in Japan last year.
The streamer had expressed “remorse” and promised not to engage in such behaviour in the future.
However, he landed himself in more trouble in April this year when he harassed a female police officer in Israel.
Then throughout October, the streamer visited multiple places in Korea, drawing massive criticism for his actions.
On 9 Oct, he streamed himself kissing a statue honouring Korean comfort women who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War 2.
The following week, he reportedly applied baby oil to the statue. He also suggested that he’d perform lewd acts on it.
Somali was subsequently attacked by locals in Seoul on 24 and 27 Oct. He was struck in the face on the 24th and kicked on the 27th.
One Korean YouTuber even offered about two million won (S$2,000) for information on Somali’s whereabouts.
Somali had to seek treatment at a hospital as a result of the attacks.
After receiving reports on the emergency hotline accusing the streamer of drug use, police have officially commenced investigations.
According to Korean law firm Lee & Lee, if found guilty, Somali faces 10 years in prison or a fine of up to 100 million won (S$95,000).
