Adjacent house partially damaged by fire at semi-detached house in Kovan

One person was sent to the hospital on Saturday (5 Sept) afternoon after a fire broke out at a landed property in Kovan.

A firefighter also sprained his ankle while attending to the blaze, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) in a Facebook post on the same day.

Large smoke plume from fire towers over Kovan area

Footage of the incident posted on Facebook showed a large, thick plume of black smoke towering over the residential area.

It appeared to be coming from a house near the Phoh Kiu Siang Tng temple along Simon Lane.

A fire engine was seen rushing towards the fire, with another fire engine and a police vehicle already at the scene.

Other photos from SCDF showed firefighters on a crane, spraying water at the affected semi-detached house, which appeared to have been gutted by the fire.

The house connected to it also sustained damage, with some of its roof tiles having fallen off.

Another photo depicted a firefighter on the ground fighting the fire with a water jet.

SCDF deploys 3 water jets to fight Kovan fire

In its post, SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at about 3pm on 5 Sept.

Firefighters found the two-storey house along Simon Lane on fire and deployed three water jets to “surround, contain and extinguish” it.

During the operation, a firefighter sprained his right ankle, but did not require conveyance to the hospital.

30 people evacuated, 1 sent to hospital

One person from the house evacuated before SCDF arrived, while about 30 other people from neighbouring premises were evacuated as a precaution.

Another person from a neighbouring residence was assessed for smoke inhalation, then conveyed to the Singapore General Hospital.

The adjacent house was also partially damaged due to the fire.

SCDF was conducting damping-down operations at the time of the post, i.e. applying water to the wet burnt surfaces to prevent potential rekindling.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
