In a press conference on Tuesday (20 Oct), a Malaysian man said loansharks had sent him a fake obituary because his father allegedly owed them RM10,000 (S$3,100).
The 31-year-old victim surnamed Lee shared that his father frequently borrowed money from loansharks.
As a result, he and his sister cut ties with him, but the loansharks continue to harass them for payment.
According to China Press, Mr Lee said his father, 69-year-old Lee Chee Wei, often borrowed from him and his sister for various reasons.
From 2019 to November last year, Lee had allegedly borrowed a total of RM600,000 (S$188,000) from them.

In November 2025, Lee owed a loanshark RM35,000 (S$11,000), which his two children eventually settled out of their own pockets.
“It was at this point that my sister and I decided to sever ties with our father and draft an agreement,” Mr Lee shared.
The agreement stated that Mr Lee and his sister would take legal action if their father asked them for money again.
Despite agreeing to his children’s terms, Mr Lee appears to have borrowed from loan sharks again.
Until 29 Sept this year, Mr Lee said he and his sister received messages claiming their father owed loansharks RM10,000 (S$3,100). This prompted them to lodge three police reports.
“Unexpectedly, just four hours after we reported the case, the loanshark found out that we had reported it and threatened to harass me at my company,” shared Mr Lee, a company director.
Mr Lee said the loanshark also tried to intimidate him by sending him a fake obituary, which stated that his funeral would be held in three days.

Mr Lee said their father is currently unreachable.
He appealed to the loan sharks to stop harassing him and his sister and to go after the actual debtor.
Furthermore, the siblings admonished their father for treating them as “human ATMs” for eight years.
