Retail therapy is a go-to stress reliever, especially in a fast-paced, competitive environment like Singapore.
But what happens when these shopping sprees outgrow the budgets of everyday heartlanders?
A local content creator recently sparked a viral discussion, asking if Tampines residents are “getting richer” after noticing a surge of luxury brands taking over Tampines Mall.
The Original Poster (OP) then questioned if these brands belonged in a suburban mall in Singapore.
In a video shared on TikTok on 25 Oct, the OP, identified as Uzen, first asked the viewers if they have “seen how Tampines Mall has changed”.

Since Oct 2025, the iconic 30-year-old mall has transformed with a “new and carefully curated mix of fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and dining concepts”.
The initiative is said to be completed by the third quarter of 2026 and marks a new chapter for the mall.
However, the changes may not have resonated well with Uzen.
He said that some of the newer brands, such as YSL, Chanel and Dior, “do not belong at all”, emphasising that Tampines Mall is a “suburban mall”.

In an exclusive with MS News, Uzen shared that he is a new Tampines resident, having lived there for only a year.
Although he doesn’t frequent the mall often, the huge presence of luxury brands was something he found “quite surprising”.

Additionally, the mall has a new Sephora boutique, an Aesop outlet and three big jewellery brands.
Uzen told MS News: “It’s unusual to see such brands in heartland suburban malls. I used to live in Serangoon and if I recall, the mall doesn’t even have these brands as standalone retail shops.”

He added: “As I’m not a long-time resident, I only noticed when these brands started occupying level 1.”
“The ground floor felt like any other suburban mall before.”
From his observations, Uzen said the change to Tampines Mall signalled to him that the people of Tampines might be “getting richer”.

According to him, the mall might have statistics indicating that “people are spending a lot more”.
Thus, the mall would “logically” bring in the aforementioned brands to attract these “high-spenders”.
Hence, instead of travelling all the way to ION or central Singapore, shoppers can simply head to Tampines Mall.
At the end of the video, Uzen asks the viewers once more: “Are the people of Tampines getting richer?”

Like Uzen, many netizens also questioned the rise of luxury brands in Tampines Mall.
Some asked to bring back various stores that used to be in the suburban mall, including McDonald’s, Kiddy Palace and Mothercare.

Others answered that Tampines residents are, in fact, “not getting richer”.

However, a few netizens disagreed with the OP, noting that some luxury brands simply relocated to standalone shops after Isetan left Tampines Mall.

Speaking to MS News, Uzen shared the same disappointment as most netizens, saying: “I think everyone misses the McDonald’s, which used to be at the entrance.”
“McDonald’s is a brand that suits the area – an everyday functional brand catering to the everyday average Singaporeans.”
