M’sia Extends MCO By 4 Weeks To 9 Jun For The 4th Time This Year

Malaysian Prime Minister Announces 4-Week Lockdown Extension To 9 Jun

Malaysians hoping for freedom on 12 May will now see the Movement Control Order (MCO) extend until 9 Jun — a 4-week extension.

Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin made the announcement today (10 May) as the fight against Covid-19 wasn’t over yet.

“…People want the government to continue to take the necessary steps to fight against the epidemic”, Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported the PM as saying.

This is the 4th time the MCO has been extended since 18 Mar, and today is the 54th day since it was first announced.

Unless it’s for work purposes, people cannot travel between states. Some businesses have reopened, however.

54 new cases on Saturday after “conditional MCO”

As of Saturday (9 May), Malaysia reported 54 new Covid-19 cases. This is a decrease from March, when there were more than 100 cases reported daily.

There are currently 6,589 cases, 108 deaths, and 4,929 recoveries.

The country opened up slightly in a “conditional MCO” on 4 May, and although crowds thronged the streets, the number of cases haven’t increased significantly.

War not over although businesses reopen

The war against Covid-19 in Malaysia seems far from over.

The further extension may also wear on people’s minds and bodies, but they largely understand that this is needed to fully stop the Covid-19 spread.

Hopefully, this will be the last extension necessary.
