Man sentenced to jail and caning after filming couple having sex at carpark

On 25 Aug, a man in Singapore was sentenced to jail and caning after he hid behind plants to film a couple having sex.

He then attempted to extort money and sex from the involved woman.

During the investigation, he tried the intimidation again with another couple.

Man hides behind carpark plants to film couple

CNA reported that the incident involved 33-year-old Singaporean Mohammad Sharulnaim Bin Miswan.

At 1am on 15 Jan 2024, Sharulnaim encountered a 35-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man on the rooftop garden of a multi-storey carpark (MSCP).

He correctly predicted that they would have sex, and thus hid behind the garden plants to film them.

Sharulnaim took five videos of their sexual acts, including filming their faces.

On 6 May 2024, the offender approached the woman when she was at a clinic with her son. He revealed that he possessed videos of her having sex.

While meeting in his car to discuss it, Sharulnaim threatened to post the video online. The woman tried to dissuade him, saying her son had special needs.

Man demands S$1,000 and sex from woman

When communicating over the phone later, he once again threatened to make the video go viral or report it to the police.

The woman initially offered him S$300 to prevent him from doing so, but he demanded S$2,000 instead.

Sharulnaim later lowered the price to S$1,500, before requesting S$1,000 and sex with her.

The woman agreed to pay him S$1,300 but refused to have sex with him.

She subsequently made a police report after being advised by the man caught in Sharulnaim’s video.

When the woman stopped responding to Sharulnaim’s threats, he switched to intimidating the man.

Offender attempts to get victim to lie to police

The police then arrested Sharulnaim without him receiving any money from either victim.

On two occasions in Sept and Oct 2024, Sharulnaim approached the woman and her sister at a supermarket and pleaded for her to drop the case.

His methods to convince her included threatening suicide and asking the woman to tell police that they were actually family.

The woman’s sister lodged a police report instead.

Man threatens second couple, prevents victim from leaving his car

On 25 Feb 2025, while the investigation was ongoing, Sharulnaim found another couple having sex in an MSCP, this time in a car. He snapped a photo of them and knocked on the window.

Pretending to be a former police officer, he claimed to have filmed them in the act and threatened to lodge a police report.

When they tried to leave, Sharulnaim blocked them with his car and demanded that he drive the woman home. Once she boarded, he locked the doors.

Sharulnaim reportedly complimented the woman’s appearance and asked about her relationship.

He then prevented her from alighting the car when he saw her boyfriend waiting for her at her home.

The second victim later lodged a police report, resulting in Sharulnaim’s arrest.

Defence lawyer says client has month-old baby

On 25 Aug, Sharulnaim pleaded guilty to putting a person in fear of harm to commit extortion, obstructing the course of justice, and wrongful confinement.

The prosecution requested two years and 11 to 13 months in jail, alongside three strokes of the cane.

The defence highlighted that Sharulnaim had to care for a daughter and a month-old baby. He was also allegedly financially supporting his elderly parents with medical issues.

Claiming that Sharulnaim had apologised to the victims, he sought leniency.

Judge criticises Sharulnaim for hurting his wife with his conduct

The judge ultimately handed the offender a sentence of two years and 10 months in jail, alongside three strokes of the cane.

During the sentencing, he told Sharulnaim that his children would be growing up without their father during his jail time.

He criticised the offender for especially hurting his wife through his conduct and causing her to have to care for their children without him.

Sharulnaim expressed gratitude to his wife for staying by him. He bid his baby farewell through a hole in the glass.
