A man in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, nearly became blind after slapping his twitching right eye for several days because he feared it would bring bad luck.

According to a Chinese report, Mr Le experienced persistent twitching in his right eyelid in early May.

Believing the superstition that a twitching right eye brings disaster, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Growing anxious, he resorted to online claims that slapping the eyelid could get rid of misfortune.

He slapped his right eye for three days straight

Mr Le forcefully slapped the area around his right eye for three consecutive days to “drive away bad luck”.

While the twitching eventually stopped, the vigorous action caused a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, severely narrowing his field of vision.

He could see only straight ahead, as his peripheral vision on both sides had disappeared entirely.

Two days after stopping the slapping, Mr Le sought immediate medical attention.

Doctors diagnosed him with a localised retinal detachment.

Surgery successfully restored his vision

Surgical treatment successfully restored Mr Le’s vision from 0.2 to 0.8.

His peripheral vision, lost due to the detachment, was fully recovered.

Doctors explained that the retina is less than 0.3mm thick.

Force applied from slapping can tear the retina, especially if there are pre-existing weak areas.

Netizens joke about his actions making bad luck come true

With the incident going viral, one netizen joked that Mr Le really did make the old saying about a twitching right eye bringing disaster come true.

While another person noted: “Eyelid twitching is a warning from the body, not a prediction of disaster. Believe in science, not superstition.”

Eye twitching is mostly caused by lack of sleep and stress

Doctors warn that short-term eyelid twitches are mostly caused by fatigue, late nights, or stress and resolve naturally with rest.

Rather than relying on superstitious remedies, experts advise that persistent twitching lasting more than a week should be promptly consulted with neurology or ophthalmology specialists.
