Elderly Man Passes Away After Marine Parade FairPrice Brawl, Suspect Faces Up To 5 Years’ Jail

Elderly Man Dies After Tussle With Another At Marine Parade FairPrice Outlet

During fits of anger, some might act impulsively and turn violent. However, for one man, such rash behaviour came with a heavy price.

On 8 May, an 80-year-old man passed away from head injuries after allegedly getting pushed by a 73-year-old man at a FairPrice outlet in Marine Parade.

Police arrested the latter the next day. He faces charges including one count of a rash act causing death and another of voluntarily causing hurt. For each charge, he faces a jail term, a fine, or both.

80-year-old man allegedly fell during fight at Marine Parade FairPrice

According to 8world News, a fight between two men — 73-year-old Ho Ah Wah and 80-year-old Cheong Hua Kwee — resulted in the death of the latter. Both of them were reportedly acquaintances.

Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) records apparently show that the accused, Ho Ah Wah, operated Hua Hua Eating House nearby, at Block 81 Marine Parade Central.

The two men had allegedly bumped into each other at the Singapore Pools betting outlet at the FairPrice Finest outlet at 6 Marine Parade Central on 8 May, at around 11am, and gotten into a fight for unknown reasons.

The pair started pushing each other, during which Cheong fell and hit his head. It was unclear which of the two men had started the fight.

At 11.25am, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived at the scene and conveyed the man to the Changi General Hospital where he later passed away, reported 8world News.

Accused arrested the next day

AsiaOne reported that Ho was arrested the day after the fateful incident, on 9 May.

Ho faces one charge of pushing the deceased, causing his death by a reckless act, and voluntarily causing hurt.

He was released on S$15,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on 23 Jun.

For causing death by a reckless act, he faces up to five years’ jail, a fine, or both.

For intentionally wounding someone, he faces three years’ jail, a fine of S$5,000, or both.

FairPrice is currently assisting the police with investigations and is unable to disclose more details.

No excuses for such violent behaviour

Regardless of the reason for their fight, nothing justifies such aggressive behaviour by the two men.

At the end of the day, violence will not solve anything and will only make things worse. In this case, unfortunately, it ended up costing someone’s life.

MS News extends our sincerest condolences to the deceased’s family. May he rest in peace.
