Migrant Worker Who Died From Covid-19 Was Family’s Only Income Provider, MWC Giving Financial Help

51-Year-Old Chinese Migrant Worker Was In S’pore Providing For Family Alone, Ashes To Be Sent Home

A 51-year-old Chinese national who died from Covid-19 on Sunday (31 May) was a migrant worker and had worked in Singapore since 2001, Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) as saying.

According to the report, he was the sole breadwinner of his family, consisting of his parents, wife, and son.

Unfortunately, he died after more than a month of battling not only Covid-19, but also cancer.

Currently, authorities as well as non-profit organisation Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) are helping his family.

At some point, he was also warded at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, according to a Facebook post by Manpower Minister Josephine Teo. She offered her condolences to the man’s family in the same post.

The migrant worker’s job before his death was as a foreman. It’s not known whether his employer is in the construction industry.

Family in China will receive ashes

MWC, along with MOM, are currently assisting in the case, being in contact with the man’s family as well as the Chinese embassy.

His ashes will be sent back to his family with the help of his employer, according to MWC chairman Yeo Guat Kwang.

MWC and MOM are also working with his employer to see if the family members require any financial help or other forms of assistance.

May migrant worker who died of Covid-19 rest in peace

We can only imagine how awful it is for family and friends to know that he died in another country, away from his loved ones.

He was the only one of his family in Singapore, reports suggest. This makes things doubly worse.

To the tens of thousands of migrant workers toiling away from their loved ones in Singapore, we salute your dedication to providing for your families, despite the risks this entails.

May the man rest in peace and that his family receives the support they need during this trying time.
