Three people are dead and several others injured after a shooting at an apartment building in the Loring Park area of Minneapolis, the United States (US), on Wednesday (2 Sept).
The deceased victims included two civilians and the suspected shooter, 35-year-old Carlton Johnson II, whose cause of death had not been disclosed, according to the City of Minneapolis.
Three Minneapolis police officers were also injured during the incident. Two were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), with one undergoing surgery.

One of them was shot in the leg, while a second officer was shot twice in the abdomen. It’s unknown how the third officer sustained his injuries.
Their injuries were reportedly not life-threatening.
Three other civilians who were shot were also treated at HCMC, with one later dying from their injuries.
Police responded at around 4:30pm local time to reports of shots fired at an apartment building near 15 East Grant Street.
When officers arrived, they found multiple victims in the lobby and heard additional gunfire from an upper floor.

As officers moved through the building, they encountered a haze that reduced visibility.
Officials later said four officers were affected by an unknown airborne substance, while two others were injured when their squad car crashed while responding to the scene.
A witness told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the shooting may have started inside an elevator at the apartment complex.
It was reported that the suspected shooter died at the scene. However, his exact cause of death remained unclear.
Authorities have not confirmed a motive, but news outlet Minnesota Reformer reported that the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Police had previously been called to the apartment over a disturbance involving the same suspect earlier that day, and he was reportedly being evicted from the building.
The suspect had been living in the complex since March 2025.
According to FOX 9, Court records reportedly showed that Johnson had a history of aggressive behaviour.
In March this year, he was accused of assaulting another resident on the premises.
On 11 June, court filings alleged that Johnson walked around the property with a firearm openly displayed, entered the management office and showed the weapon to multiple management staff.
The filings also stated that he told other residents he had obtained a new gun and “would kill someone”.
Two days later, he allegedly displayed the firearm again to people on a nearby sidewalk.
The suspect denied the allegations made in the eviction proceedings. A court hearing was scheduled for 11 Sept.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey praised officers for responding despite being under fire.

“As officers quickly moved from unit to unit to assist anyone who needed help, I can’t emphasise enough how dangerous this situation was and how heroic our officers were in response,” he said.
He added that officers rescued victims, brought people to safety and helped to transport injured individuals to the hospital.
Interim Minneapolis Police Chief Bill Peterson also thanked responding officers and emergency personnel, saying they placed themselves between the shooter and potential victims.
