It’s often heartbreaking to read about accidents involving deaths, especially when the deceased’s loved ones share their personal stories of grief and coping with the loss.
Recently, an accident occurred at Upper Boon Keng. A tipper truck ran over 74-year-old Wu Mei Jun, and she succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
At her wake, her heartbroken husband, 79-year-old Zhang Jian De, shared that they were married for 50 years and often went on holidays together.
The accident that claimed Madam Wu’s life had occurred on Thursday (9 Jun). A tipper truck reportedly collided with her at a carpark near Block 11 Upper Boon Keng Road when she was returning home from work at about 3.45pm.
The driver is now under arrest for careless driving resulting in the death of an individual.
A wake for Madam Wu took place on Friday (10 Jun), with reporters stating that Mr Zhang appeared desolate as he mourned his wife.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Mr Zhang talked about the close relationship he had with her.
They were apparently so close that he broke down during the interview and said, “I’ll be alone for the rest of my life.”
He shared that he and his wife were married for five decades. They would often go on holidays together before the pandemic to countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia.
During the pandemic, they preferred to stay at home, with his wife sometimes playing mahjong with their neighbours.
Mr Zhang also recounted how he initially got to know of his wife’s accident. He had allegedly learned the news from his neighbour’s daughter and refused to believe it at first, assuming it was a lie. He even tried to make a police report, which was how he found out about the accident.
The neighbour’s daughter then drove him to the scene of the accident.
According to Shin Min Daily News, Mr Zhang was too distressed to recognise his wife then.
He only came to terms with it when his wife’s name was read out by the attending police officers.
Mr Zhang further acknowledged that the next few days would likely be tough on him without his wife.
Reminiscing about her, he said she was a very helpful individual who believed in the notion of good people being rewarded.
When reporters asked if there was anything Mr Zhang would like to tell his late wife, he grew silent for quite a while. Holding back tears, he then said, “I hope she has a good journey.”
Mr Zhang’s heartbreak is a reminder of how unpredictable and fragile life can be.
We wish Mr Zhang our deepest condolences. Hopefully, his friends and other family will be able to assist him in the days to come.
May Madam Zhang rest in peace.
