A woman from southern Thailand recently revealed her 18-year struggle with severe pain caused by a needle left in her genital during childbirth.
Unable to afford further medical expenses, she made a plea to the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women for assistance.
On 4 Nov, a village leader called the foundation seeking help for the woman’s case. He said that the 36-year-old woman had gone to a local hospital 18 years ago to give birth.
However, while the doctor was sewing up her vagina, one of the nurses lost a needle inside her genital. The doctor tried using his fingers to search for the misplaced needle, to no avail.
After he was unable to find the needle, he decided to just continue with the operation for fear of delaying the suturing, which could lead to more blood loss.
Following the operation, the woman began feeling constant pain in her lower abdomen, which flared up to unbearable levels at times.
In 2023, the woman went to get examined for her constant pain. Using an x-ray, doctors found the misplaced needle.
They then sent her to a hospital in Songkhla in order for her to get surgery to remove the needle. Unfortunately, doctors had to delay the operation multiple times after they found that the needle constantly shifted inside her.
The village leader said the woman would visit the hospital around 3-4 times per month, using her welfare to pay for most of the costs. However, the transport costs have caused a financial strain on her family, so the village leader requested help from the foundation.
The foundation is currently coordinating with the Narathiwat Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office to resolve the woman’s case.
It is unclear whether the woman will be seeking legal action for medical malpractice.
