Parents arrested for exposing boys to drugs after raid at Marsiling flat

The parents of two young boys have been arrested after drugs and drug paraphernalia were found inside their flat in Marsiling.

This included the master bedroom, where their children were present, said the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) in a news release on Thursday (13 Aug).

Parents arrested at Marsiling flat for suspected drug-related offences

In the early hours of 11 Aug, CNB conducted an anti-drug operation based on information received, it said.

The raid took place at a residential unit in the vicinity of Marsiling Lane, where a Singaporean couple were arrested.

The 25-year-old man and 24-year-old woman are suspected of drug-related offences, including exposing their children to drugs.

During a search of the unit, a small amount of drugs was seized, including cannabis, ‘Ice’ and ‘Ecstasy’.

Drug paraphernalia was also found in various parts of the flat, including the living room and master bedroom.

The couple’s two young sons were present in the bedroom.

Boys being cared for by next-of-kin

“Appropriate arrangements” have been made to ensure that the boys’ welfare is taken care of, CNB said.

A photo showed CNB officers taking care of the three-year-old and seven-month-old children.

They have since been placed in the care of their next-of-kin, CNB added.

Drugs affect not just abusers but their loved ones: CNB

Superintendent Xanthus Tong, Deputy Commanding Officer of Enforcement for CNB’s ‘J’ Division, used the case to illustrate that drug abuse is “not victimless”.

Rather, its harms are “far-reaching” as they affect not just abusers but their families and loved ones, including young children, he noted.

Urging parents to keep their children away from drugs and their associated harms, he maintained that CNB would take “firm enforcement action” against those who expose children to drugs.

Adults who expose children to drugs liable for prosecution

Investigations into the drug activities of all arrested suspects are ongoing, CNB said.

According to CNB, anyone aged 21 years and above who exposes controlled drugs or drug paraphernalia to a child shall be liable for prosecution under Section 11B of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973 (MDA).

This also applies to adults who permit or fail to take reasonable steps to prevent a young person from consuming controlled drugs.

Also, trafficking a controlled drug, offering to do so, or any act or offer in preparation for or for the purpose of trafficking, is an offence under Section 5 of the MDA.

This applies whether the offender acts on their own behalf or on behalf of someone else, even if that other person is overseas.
