President Halimah Designs Her Own Mickey To Celebrate National Day

Mickey Mouse Captured Doing “Singapore Stuff” For The First Time, Like Hawking Satay

Few would expect Mickey Mouse to embark on a career as a satay hawker.

But actor Mr Desmond Tan saw a future for the iconic character in our local food scene, and armed him with a rattan fan and four sticks of satay.

As part of Mickey Mouse’s 90th anniversary and Singapore’s 53rd National Day, local personalities have decorated 90 60cm tall Mickey Mouse figurines, now on display at Raffles City.

President Halimah Yacob and artists such as JJ Lin and Nathan Hartono took part in Disney’s “Mickey Go Local” campaign — which aims to reconnect Singaporeans with the iconic character.

Consequently, the design of each figurine embodies a unique aspect of Singapore society, or a wish we harbour for our nation.

Mickey, President Halimah-style

President Halimah proved her mettle as she exhibited her artistic flair.

Her version of the mouse dons a shirt displaying the President’s Challenge Logo.

Look closely and you will observe our iconic Nyonya Kebaya design on the trousers worn by Nathan Hartono’s Mickey.

Meanwhile, JJ Lin has gone for a monochrome Mickey, which we think looks rather dapper.

Of course, Disney hasn’t overlooked our national pastime — shopping.

Shopaholics will be doubly delighted to find their favourite childhood character emblazoned on pillows that could become your tummy’s best friend.

Samsui women, easily recognised by their red headgear, were women who worked as labourers in the construction industry during Singapore’s early days.

Acts of kindness

CHF has pledged to donate $300,000 to the President’s challenge.

As of now, they’ve announced that they will donate $10,000 for President Halimah’s figurine, and $2,000 for every other artwork.

From Steamboat Willie to Nasi Lemak Mickey

Mickey has come a long way from his Steamboat Willie days, but we’re sure Singaporeans will welcome every variation of him.
