Rider in Thailand allegedly refused to deliver pork dish because she is Muslim

Earlier this week, an eatery operator in Thailand went on Facebook to express her confusion and frustration after a Muslim delivery rider allegedly refused to deliver a pork dish.

She shared her experience on Facebook on 7 Sept, mentioning that it was not the first time a rider opted not to deliver a pork dish due to their faith.

Allegedly asked restaurant to cancel order

In the post, the eatery operator says she is based in Phuket. She said that one day, a Muslim delivery rider arrived at her store to pick up an order.

However, when the rider discovered it was a pork dish, she allegedly claimed that she would not be able to deliver it because of her religion. She then requested the eatery to cancel the order.

When the eatery refused, the rider cancelled the order herself and then left.

A different rider then took the order.

The incident left the eatery operator with questions regarding the exact rules of Islam.

“Is it forbidden for Muslims to even touch the plastic bag if the dish inside is made of pork?” she questioned. She added that it was her third time experiencing something like this.

Wonders if delivery is the right job if the rules are that strict

In an interview with Phuket Times, the eatery operator further clarified her comments after her post went viral.

She emphasised that she does not want to cause conflict because of her comments.

She first explained that if she had accepted the rider’s request to cancel the order, then the eatery would have been the one taking the costs.

Elaborating on why it is an issue, she also explained that cancellations such as these lead to the order being delayed, which means that the customer will end up being dissatisfied.

“If you’re a rider, then sometimes you don’t get to choose what you deliver,” she said.

“If there are restrictions that make your job that difficult for you, then it might be better for you to find something that fits your religious beliefs better.”
