Robertson Quay Crowds Spotted On Day 40 Of Circuit Breaker, Netizens Express Concerns

Netizen Spots Large Robertson Quay Crowds On 16 May

Update (17 May, 3.51pm): URA has banned takeaway alcohol sales at Robertson Quay, affecting all F&B outlets “along the stretch”. The full story is available here.

However, TAP Craft Beer Bar has confirmed that deliveries from their Robertson Quay outlet are still allowed.

We’re into Day 41 of the ‘Circuit Breaker’ (CB), and even though we’re potentially near the end of what has been a difficult period, we understand that the final stretch is perhaps the hardest to get through.

Someone spotted large groups of people outdoors at Robertson Quay on Saturday evening (16 May) while on a new exercise route, and you’d think that the CB period was over from the pictures taken.

Large crowds gather at Robertson Quay, many seemingly exercising

The netizen, posting pictures that a friend took, claimed to not see any enforcement officers along Robertson Quay in the evening at around 6.25pm.

There appeared to be large numbers of people out and about, many riding bikes or going for a run.

While it’s okay to not wear a mask while exercising, the pictures don’t show a lot of safe distancing occurring.

Another picture depicts a number of people sitting around, many unmasked.

Some may question the day the pictures were taken given these scenes look practically unbelievable.

However, the pictures do show many wearing masks with the exception of those working out, so we can be sure that it was taken during the CB period.

People spotted drinking beer outside

During the CB period, we are only allowed to get deliveries and takeaways from restaurants and hawker centres. Many places have removed their tables and chairs to prevent dine-ins.

However, one of the pictures show a group of 3 enjoying cold pints of beer out of plastic cups.

A promotion by TAP Craft Bar is shown in the foreground, and some were concerned that the patrons had purchased their beer from there.

However, TAP clarified in a Facebook post that the table doesn’t belong to them.

TAP also clarified that according to their CCTV footage, these gentlemen and lady were not dining within the bar’s premises.

They stressed that people shouldn’t be eating and drinking outdoors, no matter where they bought their wares.

Doing so can result in a fine for restaurants in breach, which would be extremely tough for them.

Hopefully the standing tables can be removed.

Please remember to practice safe distancing outdoors

While we can’t know the full context of the scene unless we were there ourselves, it’s worth a reminder to stagger our exercise hours.

Yes, we can work out outdoors during this period, but we still have to abide by safe distancing guidelines, and not stay outside unnecessarily.

We should also try to avoid large crowds in general, and not add to potential new clusters just because we want to exercise.

To do so, we can exercise earlier or later than usual — we’ve already had to make drastic changes to our lifestyles during the CB period, so we can do this too.

Let’s all do our part to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Otherwise, we risk prolonging the CB period, and we don’t want that.
