Men seen roller skating in Hougang, safety risks raised

Two people were filmed roller skating along the leftmost lane of Hougang Ave 3 on Friday (28 Aug) evening, drawing criticism from netizens.

Some, however, questioned the driver who filmed them, pointing out that filming while behind the wheel was also unsafe.

According to SG Road Vigilante (SGRV) on Facebook, the incident occurred at 6.21pm on 28 Aug.

The footage, filmed from a car, showed a man roller skating down the leftmost lane of Hougang Ave 3.

He was casually travelling at speeds matching the car, as well as overtaking pedestrians on nearby footpaths.

The man held a water bottle in his hands and did not wear a helmet.

Further ahead down the road was another roller skater, but their features could not be distinguished in the video.

Netizen notes difficulty of braking for roller skaters

Singapore’s Road Traffic Rules allow roller skates to be used on the footway of roads.

However, given that the two men were seen skating on the road’s carriageway, their use of roller skates does not fall within permitted use.

Several netizens opined that roller skating on the road would likely lead to a fatal accident.

Another noted that unlike Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs), it would be more difficult for a fast-moving roller skater to brake.

However, others noticed that the recording appeared to be coming from the driver’s seat of the camcar and questioned if the cameraperson was recording while driving.
