Fans criticise SEGA for launch of official Sonic Discord after 50,000 join server in six hours

On Tuesday (6 Oct), Japanese video game company SEGA welcomed fans to join its official Sonic Discord server.

The server aimed to be a space for fans to “chill and chat all things Sonic the Hedgehog” or find players to race in “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds”.

The moderators posted a launch day Q&A and claimed that over 50,000 people hopped onto the server within around six hours.

However, a few hours later, the server moderators quickly removed most users’ ability to chat in the server after the chat became flooded with wild memes and profanities.

SEGA launched official Sonic Discord server

The Discord server launched on Tuesday (6 Oct) morning in a post on the official Sonic the Hedgehog X account.

The caption said: “Looking for a place to chill and chat all things Sonic the Hedgehog? Maybe find people to race in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds? We are excited to welcome you to the official Sonic Discord server!”

The announcement quickly went viral online as fans swarmed to join the server to share their love for the blue blur.

As with most large servers, the Sonic team pre-emptively introduced rules for its community to follow, including a hilarious rule to avoid posting AI-generated “Eggman dating simulators”.

According to the rules, fans must keep posts family-friendly, protect personal information, and treat each other with kindness and respect.

However, it was not long before the rules were broken.

Server quickly descended into chaos

Upon launching, users started to flood the server with wild memes, profanities, obscene fanart and even death threats.

Fans quickly shared screenshots of various messages being sent in the server, highlighting how most of the users violated the rules.

Some were also appalled that users were sharing inappropriate messages about the franchise’s characters.

A few netizens also voiced concern about potential danger for minors in the server.

Most fans also questioned why an official Sonic Discord was even made as the fanbase has garnered a notorious reputation over the years.

Moderators quickly imposed restrictions

Mere hours after its launch, the moderators quickly put in place strict moderation features.

First, the moderators removed most users’ ability to chat, and putting the server on slow mode to reduce the quantity of posts made in each channel.

They also locked the chat behind a members-only role, and prevented newcomers from posting unless they used a Discord Nitro boost.

Additionally, a plea to “keep it family friendly” was present on the rules page as well.

During the launch day Q&A, the moderators also confirmed that they disabled posting images by default, and an “aggressive” auto filter was removing messages written in all caps.

SEGA Japan’s director of strategy disagrees with ‘chaos’

Later in the day, the director of strategy, studio, and community relations at Sega of Japan Aaron Webber shared his take on the incident.

In a statement on X, Webber said that he disagreed with framing the ordeal as chaotic. He claimed that while the launch “was” pretty wild, the reception is “normal” when “over 30,000 people arrive”.

Additionally, he assured the fans that the moderators have been doing a “heroic job” to keep the server clean, and thanked fans for “being patient”.

In response to the backlash online, Webber stated that there were “bad actors trying to cause havoc”, who had “cherry-picked screens” from the server.

However, fans disagreed with Webber about “cherry picking” criticism.

According to netizens, they claimed that multiple individuals were banned from the server for no reason, whereas alleged paedophiles were allowed to be part of the server.
