Speaking to the Chinese newspaper, Mr Lan (transliterated from Chinese) — a resident of the block — recalled seeing the man on the ledge when he headed out at about 5pm.

He also claimed that the elderly man looked “depressed”.

Sensing how dangerous the situation was, Mr Lan immediately contacted the police.

However, when he returned home about an hour later, the elderly man was nowhere to be seen.

Elderly man safe after dangerous act

Shin Min Daily News reported that Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers were present at the scene.

Mr Deng, another resident of the block, said the officers visited his unit asking for permission to conduct rescue operations through the windows if the need arises.

For safety purposes, SCDF personnel also installed an inflatable air pack at the foot of the block.

Thankfully, the man eventually climbed back to the corridor on his own and claimed he was merely enjoying the view.

He also denied making an attempt at taking his own life.

Arrested under Mental Health Act

Based on Shin Min Daily News’ understanding, the elderly man is a resident of the area.

Despite his claims, the 93-year-old was still arrested by the police under the Mental Health Act.

Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of the incident.
