Serangoon & Hougang neighbourhood police centres to merge, will reopen on 6 July after renovation

Police say merger of Serangoon & Hougang NPCs will ‘better address evolving security challenges’

Two neighbourhood police centres (NPCs) serving adjacent areas in the north-east — Serangoon and Hougang — will be combined into a larger operational base in order to optimise police resources, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) has announced.

The newly merged Serangoon NPC will open on 6 July after renovation, said SPF in a news release on Monday (11 May).

Hougang NPC counter to close for renovation

Serangoon NPC, which is now undergoing renovation works, will have a refurbished self-help report-lodging area after it reopens, SPF said.

Following the merger, Hougang NPC’s service counter will close for renovation on 6 July, and later reopen as Hougang West Neighbourhood Police Post (NPP).

The current Hougang NPP will be renamed Hougang East NPP, tentatively by the fourth quarter of next year.

Police say merger of Serangoon & Hougang NPCs will improve operations

The merger is part of efforts to “better address evolving security challenges and community needs”, enhancing deployment flexibility and improving operational effectiveness, SPF said.

The Community Policing Unit in the merged Serangoon NPC would be able to organise larger-scale community policing events, while its Crime Strike Force would have “better coordination and control” when handling more complex crimes and incidents, it added.

SPF stressed that there would be “no change to police presence and incident response” in the Serangoon and Hougang estates, saying:

The number of Ground Response Force officers patrolling and responding to incidents will remain the same as the total deployed today in both estates.

More than 200,000 police cameras to be installed islandwide

The merger is also part of the broader transformation plans for police frontline operations, SPF noted.

This includes progressively increasing the number of police cameras to more than 200,000 islandwide, including within Serangoon and Hougang.
