As Johor intensifies its crackdown on littering, two Singaporeans became among 16 people recently sentenced to community service.
They performed two hours of cleaning near a shopping centre and had to pay fines of varying severity.

Johor Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) director Zainal Fitri Ahmad stated that the 16 people had to do their cleaning work on 10 May.
According to Oriental Daily, they comprised eight Malaysians, three Indonesians, two Bangladeshis, a Nepalese, and two Singaporeans.
The 16 violators had been caught littering cigarette butts, plastic bags, and drink containers in public.

Donning reflective vests, they performed two hours of cleaning near Angsana Johor Bahru Mall.
Additionally, they received fines totalling RM14,400 (S$4,665), with a maximum of RM2,000 (S$647) per person.

From 1 Jan to 9 May this year, Johor has issued 1,083 notices for littering. 32 cases resulted in court settlements, including RM26,300 (S$8,520) in fines so far.
The intensified enforcement comes as part of Johor’s vision of becoming a developed regional economic powerhouse by 2030.

This wasn’t the first time Singaporeans have gotten in trouble for littering in Malaysia this year.
In January, three Singaporeans were caught littering and sentenced to mandatory community service.
Another Singaporean tourist threw a cigarette butt on the ground in Kuala Lumpur and received four hours of community service, plus a S$482 fine.
