For some, admitting your feelings for someone is an intimate matter. But students at a university in Singapore saw it differently, with some of them coming together to help deliver a very public ‘confession’ to a peer during a lecture.
While it’s unclear whether the surprise was a success, the gesture certainly elicited positive reactions in the room.
The incident was also captured in a TikTok video which has since garnered over 170,000 views.
The video of the romantic gesture was posted by Grace or @graceglazee on TikTok, who’s friends with the girl being ‘confessed’ to.
In the clip, students decked out in matching pink and white outfits stand at the front of what seems to be a small classroom.
They turn out to be a group that was recruited to serenade one of the students in the room.
When the camera pans over to the female student in question, she looks puzzled by the performance happening in front of her.
A boy from the group then walks up to her and presents her with a rose and a card with her name on it.
After the group stops singing, the boy delivers a rousing speech, uttering cheesy lines like, “It isn’t a crime to love.”
As he finishes his speech, the recipient of the confession shyly covers her face before bursting into giggles.
What transpired after the video is unclear, as the clip ends there and there are no follow-up posts at the time of writing. MS News has reached out to Grace for comments and we’ll update the article if she gets back.
Understandably, the very public romantic gesture impressed many viewers on TikTok.
One TikTok user even compared the confession to something out of the musical TV show, ‘Glee’.
Another user also found the gesture to be quite sweet. They applauded the brave stunt and admitted that they “could honestly never do that”.
Being the curious viewers they are, many netizens wanted to know the girl’s response to the confession.
As it turns out, the group that performed the song was not a choir, but rather an a capella group at the Singapore Management University (SMU) called SMU VOIX.
They shared with MS News that the performance is part of their annual Valentine’s Day dedication service titled ‘XOXO’, which is one of their flagship events.
Through this service, students can order a song dedication for their friends, partners or even professors. Club members will then perform the dedications over the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.
More specifically in this incident, the club clarified that the boy who read the speech aloud was not the dedicator — he was simply a member who fulfilled a request on behalf of the actual dedicator.
The dedications are apparently a huge part of the school’s history, as SMU VOIX explained,
It has been a tradition at SMU for more than 10 years and something the students and faculty always look forward to!
