Fan of Four Leaves, Soup Spoon & Lana Cakes asks S’poreans which local business or brand they will support

Four Leaves, Soup Spoon, and Lana Cakes supporter asks Singaporeans to share which local brands they support

A Singapore Redditor has sparked a discussion on local brands and businesses worth supporting, with Four Leaves, Soup Spoon and Lana Cakes being their personal favourites.

OP shares local brands they support

The post, shared on r/askSingapore on 11 Aug, asked Singaporeans to share local businesses or brands they would “support” and explain why.

The Original Poster (OP) said the question came after seeing another post about local businesses and brands that people should not support.

“Personally, it’s Four Leaves, Soup Spoon and Lana Cakes!” the OP said, joking that all their choices were food-related.

They felt that the quality of Four Leaves is “not too bad” compared with mass-market bakery brands.

Soup Spoon was also praised for what the OP saw as consistently improving processes and food quality.

As for Lana Cakes, they described it as their “comfort food for a bad bad day” with a high “yum factor”.

Netizens also share their own local favourites

Other netizens quickly joined in the conversation with their own recommendations of their local favourites.

A netizen listed Bengawan Solo, and also local breweries Alive Brewing and Pink Blossoms as their go-to-brands in Singapore.

One Redditor also shared that they were a fan of Stuff’d, a brand that also provides “free meals to the underprivileged”.

Another netizen cited Filmhouse and hopes that it will not end up like The Projector, another indie arthouse cinema.

Not enough positive coverage celebrating local businesses

The OP, who wished to remain anonymous, told MS News that they feel there are not enough posts highlighting positive experiences with local vendors, companies, and brands.

According to them, there are numerous posts soliciting negative experiences and calling for the boycott or cancellation of errant businesses.

“I wondered why more people don’t share their experiences to help others decide where to spend their dollars and support good local businesses,” they said.

When asked why all their listed brands were food-related, the OP said: “I could only think of food-related brands at that point of time!”

They also explained that food-related businesses have been a popular choice among entrepreneurs for the past 50 years.

However, most of them have already been wiped out with the “atrophy of retail” in Singapore over the past few years.

The OP also shared that they are a fan of Popular, The Paper Bunny, and Beyond The Vines too.
